Lectures on Infinitary Model Theory
نویسنده
چکیده
Infinitary logic, the logic of languages with infinitely long conjunctions, plays an important role in model theory, recursion theory and descriptive set theory. This book is the first modern introduction to the subject in 40 years, and will bring students and researchers in all areas of mathematical logic up to the threshold of modern research. The classical topics of back-and-forth systems, model existence techniques, indiscernibles and end extensions are covered before more modern topics are surveyed. Zilber’s Categoricity Theorem for quasiminimal excellent classes is proved and an application is given to covers of multiplicative groups. Infinitary methods are also used to study uncountable models of counterexamples to Vaught’s Conjecture, and effective aspects of infinitary model theory are reviewed, including an introduction to Montalbán’s recent work on spectra of Vaught counterexamples. Self-contained introductions to effective descriptive set theory and hyperarithmetic theory are provided, as is an appendix on admissible model theory.

A Primer on Infinitary Logic
These lectures are a brief survey of some elements of the model theory of the infinitary logics L ∞,ω and L ω1,ω. It is intended to serve as an introduction to Baldwin's Categoricity. Let L be a language. In the logic L κ,ω we build formulas using the symbols of 1 We define formulas inductively with the usual formation rules for terms, atomic formulas, negation, and quantifiers and the followin...
متن کاملThe complex numbers and complex exponentiation Why Infinitary Logic is necessary!
In this article we discuss some of the uses of model theory to investigate the structure of the field of complex numbers with exponentiation and associated algebraic groups. After a sketch of some background material on the use of first order model theory in algebra, we describe the inadequacy of the first order framework for studying complex exponentiation. Then, we discuss the Zilber’s progra...
متن کاملSome problems in automata theory which depend on the models of set theory
We prove that some fairly basic questions on automata reading infinite words depend on the models of the axiomatic system ZFC. It is known that there are only three possibilities for the cardinality of the complement of an ω-languageL(A) accepted by a Büchi 1-counter automaton A. We prove the following surprising result: there exists a 1-counter Büchi automaton A such that the cardinality of th...
متن کاملFixpoint Logic vs. Infinitary Logic in Finite-Model Theory
In recent years several extensions of first-order logic have been investigated in the context of finite-model theory. Fixpoint logic and the infinitary logic L∞ω with a finite number of variables have turned out to be of particular importance. The study of fixpoint logic generated interactions with both database theory and complexity theory, while the infinitary logic L∞ω proved to be a useful ...
متن کاملInfinitary Rewriting--Theory and Applications
Infinitary rewriting generalises usual finitary rewriting by providing infinite reduction sequences with a notion of convergence. The idea of – at least conceptually – assigning a meaning to infinite derivations is well-known, for example, from lazy functional programming or from process calculi. Infinitary rewriting makes it possible to apply rewriting in order to obtain a formal model for suc...
